Brandon Lewis MP took the opportunity to announce that Stoke-on-Trent City Council will be rolling out even more plots for local self builders, extending an award-winning scheme that has already helped families to build their own homes. On Friday he visited Farm View in Penkhull – a council-owned parcel of land that the authority cleared, built a road through and created six serviced plots that were auctioned for local people to buy.
Mr Lewis said: “The Penkhull self build scheme is exactly the sort of innovative initiative which we want to see across Britain. This is one of only 11 national vanguard (Right to Build) schemes from across the country exploring innovative approaches to meeting the housing challenge. It has proved a real success.
“I can announce the roll out of the scheme, with another 75 plus plots on their way over at least three more sites.”
A Stoke-on-Trent City Council spokesperson would not reveal precise details of the sites and plots. However, the local authority hopes to release further information on the new opportunities announced for self builders by April 2016 – after it has consulted residents and planning processes have been completed. It asks that people who wish to register an interest should do so via the council’s self and custom build register.
Cabinet Member for Housing Councillor Randolph Conteh said it was vital that the city council played its part in ensuring local people had the quality housing they need: “Housing is an essential part of the formula for success in this city and we are determined to get the city building again.”
