An assortment of plots has been released by Sheffield City Council allowing people the chance to build or customise their own home.
The land opened up by the local authority – one of the 11 areas pioneering the Right to Build scheme – could see over 80 self build homes on nine sites in the city.

The majority of plots are in the Wincobank area, midway between the city centre and Rotherham:
- Up to 20 homes are possible on land off Fife Street
- Eight homes at Newman Court, Newman Road
- Five homes at Merton Lane
- Three homes on land adjacent to 91 Wincobank Close
The other plots are spread across other parts of Sheffield:
- 18 homes on land off Gaunt Road, Gleadless
- 13 homes on a greenfield site at Beighton Road, Woodhouse
- Eight homes at Whitehouse Lane, Walkley
- Five homes on land off Danewood Avenue/Castlebeck Drive, Manor
- One home on land adjacent to 40 Manor Oaks Road, Wybourn
Most of the plots are big enough for more than one home which could see a group self build, or cohousing, scheme work.
Sheffield City Council is offering a number of hours of planning support and guidance to the preferred bidder for each of the plots and has carried out site investigations so that people building on them can have more certainty about what is under the ground and the costs that will be involved in development.
In advocating its self/custom build programme, the local authority says it is keen to inform people about how to build their own homes as it offers “a more affordable and faster route to home ownership”. As the council creates more interest in self/custom build, it believes that it “will encourage builders and developers to deliver more of it”.
