Hannah Jones and Theo Hodnett took away the Build It Awards 2014 ‘Best Self Build Award’ for their Shropshire home (main picture) – constructed on a tight budget and utilising the local council’s enabling scheme. It has been finished to a very high standard and the home owners did much of this work themselves. The judges felt that this home was outstanding in its design, whilst perfectly matching the clients’ requirements.

336 self custom build-body2Other winners included Carillion Igloo which won the ‘Best Custom Build Project’ trophy for its Trevenson Park development in Cornwall – a scheme which the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) hopes to roll out in a similar style across the country. The project will create 54 homes; each of which will be bespoke designed to suit the owners’ needs and budget. A number of ‘teams’ to build the homes are being assembled and the finished dwellings will be 10% larger and £10,000 cheaper than local volume house-building homes.

The Lancaster Co-Housing project won the ‘Best Community Self Build’ accolade for its pioneering, creative co-housing model, Passivhaus certification and the overall polished aesthetic of their project. And members of the National Custom & Self Build Association (NaCSBA) voted Cherwell District Council as the ‘Best Council for Custom / Self Builders’ – one of the 11 vanguard councils that have volunteered to pioneer the Right to Build.

The winners were lauded at the ceremony held at the Swindon Hilton next to the industry’s National Self Build and Renovation Centre. Guests joined the judging panel – including NaCSBA’s Self Build Representative Mike Hardwick and Build It’s editor Anna-Marie DeSouza – to honour impressive contributions to self/custom build.

A full list of the winners of each category can be found on the Build It Awards 2014 website.
