blue-ribbon-self-build-winner-02And the winner of the Blue Ribbon Awards for self build home of the year goes to…Wedge House.

In fact Wedge House is not really wedge shaped at all, but it does fit into an irregular plot set within the suburban gardens of another home in Surrey. Soup Architects designed the building, which Blue Ribbon judges described as “beautifully done” and a “great plan”.

The Blue Ribbon awards – a spin-off of the Ideal Home Show since the 1960s – were presented by George Clarke and Richard Blakeway, the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Land.

blue-ribbon-self-build-winner-03Soup has designed a building that creates light and airy spaces through its large windows and roof lights that bring natural light into the heart of the house. It has an asymmetric design to tuck the house into a triangular pocket of the garden.

The house conforms to the Lifetime Home criteria and meets the brief to be a home for the three generations of the family. A bespoke steel frame has a highly insulated timber frame infill, and integrated heat recovery ventilation system and solar water panels keeping up its green credentials. The exterior finish is vertical batten Western Red Cedar to create a clean and contemporary look for the 5-bed home.

The award for the individual conversion project of the year went to Paul Archer Design for Power House, a timber-clad renovation project which cites “excellent use of materials inside and out’. Solo project of the year went to Mole Architects for Stackyard House, a two-storey extension with garage with a “carefully orchestrated relationship with the existing house and exterior spaces”. The pre-fabricated home of the year was Burwood Park House from EBS elk Limited, which judges called “gold standard design that will stand the test of time”.
