Self build could play a major part in kick-starting the construction of more homes, according to a new report by the UK Green Build Council.

In preparing its ‘Plan for Growth in a Resource-Constrained World’, which includes recent statistics from the National Self Build Association, the UKGBC asked its members what the housing sector needs to do to ensure its survival and generate growth in the wake of the economic crisis and mounting scarcity of resources.

People should have greater say

The organisation brought together a cross-section of business leaders to develop a range of strategic options for the industry and their conclusions culminated in the idea of ‘You Design and Build’, which taps into the recent increased interest in self-build. The strategy encourages people to have much greater say in the design of their future property without having to commit to project managing the whole process with the aim of delivering high value, low-carbon and sustainable growth opportunities.
