The government has announced plans to relax planning laws applied to extensions, as part of a raft of measures announced to boost house building in the UK.

Under the new Permitted Development Rights, homeowners will be able to build bigger extensions than they could previously, without planning consent.

Currently extensions of three to four metres from the rear wall of any home are automatically allowed for most homes. The relaxations would allow single storey extensions at the back of homes that extend for 8m for detached homes,and 6m for others.

The current rules, which restrict an extension to no more than 50% of a property’s garden, will remain.

The new rules  are currently under a one month consultation period, but if given the go-ahead are expected to last for three years.

Planning Consultant, Sally Tagg, said: “The Permitted Development Holiday which is welcome, seems on the face of it to be a positive step forward although it may have limited benefits for Self Builders”.
