A self build specialist is offering aspiring self builders an opportunity to see first-hand how a typical self build home is constructed.

In a UK industry first, Potton is opening its doors to allow people to watch stage-by-stage construction of it’s fifth and most contemporary show home at the company’s Self Build Show Centre in St Neots, Cambridgeshire.

Through a series of events, known as ‘Self Build Live’, potential self builders will be given ‘access all areas’ to see the construction of a fully certified Passivhaus home and the chance to learn how to build their own.

A number of ‘Self Build Live’ events are taking place at key stages of the build. From laying the slab, installing insulation and skimming the walls to fitting the bathrooms, interior design and decoration, each event has been structured to deliver essential self build information and to provide an insight into building a home. The first event, scheduled for this Friday (5th June), will provide tutorials and demonstrations on laying the substructure.

Potton’s Self Build Director, Dr Paul Newman said: “We are building one of the most contemporary show homes in the country and, by providing access to our Passivhaus show home throughout it’s construction, visitors will see that anything is achievable. Self Build Live is a powerful demonstration of our commitment to ensuring that self builders have access to the very best advice for every stage of their project.”

Each stage of the construction programme has been intentionally slowed down in order to give visitors the opportunity to see every build stage, with the finished home completed in May 2016.
