The Planning Minister, Nick Boles, has called for public land to be made available to young people to allow them to build their own homes.

He proposes that young people should add themselves to a ‘self build waiting list’, an idea that could run in tandem with the council house waiting list.

With many struggling to get a foot on the property ladder, Boles is adamant that young Britons want “the opportunity to get on and help themselves”, and that the Government should “go even further” to make it possible.

Speaking at a Conservative Think Tank recently, Boles said: “We should think about saying, ‘If you can’t buy a home then you should be able to get a plot and to be able to build yourself a home if you want one – put yourself on the list for self-build’.

Boles is understood to be keen on running a pilot project to test the workability and benefits of disposing of serviced building plots on a larger scale. Details of the pilot are expected be made available shortly

The Minister’s proposals are currently being developed as part of coalition policy and come at a time when four further sites earmarked for self and custom build developers have been announced by the new housing minister Kris Hopkins.
