NaCSBA is delighted to announce that Richard Bacon will be joining our Executive Committee and taking on the role of Chair. His appointment marks an important moment for the organisation and reflects his longstanding commitment to the custom and self build sector.

Richard Bacon is well known to the sector as the Parliamentary champion of custom and self build through his sponsoring of the Right to Build legislation. He led the independent review into the scaling up of self and custom build commissioned by the Prime Minister in 2021 – known as “The Bacon Review”. Although no longer a Member of Parliament he remains as passionate as ever about the subject and his understanding of and connections with the policy community will be a huge asset to NaCSBA.

Peter Johns, NaCSBA CEO, said:
“We are thrilled that Richard has not only agreed to join our Executive Committee but to serve as NaCSBA Chair. His passion and energy for custom and self build are well known, and his understanding of the sector is exceptional. Richard’s support for our cause during his time in Parliament was invaluable, and we are fortunate to have him take on this leadership role. We look forward to continuing our work together to make custom and self build a mainstream housing choice across the UK.”

Richard Bacon said: “I am delighted and honoured to take on this challenge at a critical time for housing. It is now quite obvious that the housing model in the UK no longer works properly and that many people, especially in the younger generation, have been priced out of home ownership, while even renting a home costs far too high a proportion of their income. The innovation and imagination which is a normal part of the self-commissioned housing sector has a key role to play in solving the country’s housing problems – and, indeed, the Competition and Markets Authority has highlighted custom and self-build housing as important ways to increase the supply and diversity of new homes in the UK. I look forward to working with the NaCSBA team to make sure that this important truth is more widely understood”.

Richard’s leadership will help drive forward our mission to expand opportunities for people across the country to design and build the homes they want. We welcome the opportunity to work with him as we build on this momentum and champion greater choice in UK housing.
