People are being called upon to show an interest in building their own homes in two areas of England.

The Gillingham Neighbourhood Plan Group, formed under the auspices of Gillingham Town Council, has developed a Self Build & Custom Build Housing Survey to establish demand and support for a range of housing options. It aims to find out what interest there is in self and custom build locally and to include its findings in the Neighbourhood Plan which residents can view during a ‘Drop-In Week‘ – established to shape the future development of the town – at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council has opened up a Custom Build register for people to demonstrate their support for custom build in the town. The local authority plans to use the register to understand what the demand for custom build is and will look at the range of services and support required such as finance and planning matters.

Both organisations’ registers are in addition to those set up by the 11 English councils pioneering the government’s Right to Build scheme.
