These councils are just a few of the 11 selected by the government to pioneer the Right to Build Scheme supporting aspiring custom and self builders.
Lincolnshire council launches questionnaire
West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) is asking people interested in self and custom build to complete a questionnaire to enable it to understand the requirements of local people. The list of questions is also accompanied by a Frequently Asked Questions document.
Support is being offered to people undertaking a self/custom build project through the council’s building control team which provides advice on statutory requirements and regulations of building control and planning; working with contractors/developers; on-site service and utility provision and obtaining the correct certification; and plan preparation.
Councillor Jeff Summers, WLDC Leader, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a vanguard authority to help local people looking to design and build their own homes.
“This (register) will help identify people wanting to build their dream home and bring them together with landowners and developers, who can provide the land and skills required to make projects become a reality. If you have dreamt of building your own home, customised to suit you and your lifestyle, then now is the time to act.”
Canvassing underway in West Midlands
Shropshire Council has also developed a short questionnaire that it is asking anyone with a serious interest in self build to complete.
It will use the information collected to identify the overall demand for self build, the areas where people want to build and the type of housing required. By filling in the questionnaire, self and custom builders will also be registering an interest in purchasing a plot at market value in Shropshire with a commitment to commence with the build.
