An innovative self build housing scheme that also provides training for building apprentices is nearing completion in Grange Road, near Burton-on-Trent town centre.

The Trent & Dove Housing Association initiative provides 11 two-bedroom and four one-bedroom flats. When complete in March, the self build apprentices will have the first option of purchasing one of the homes – four of which will be available to buy through a shared ownership scheme, with the remainder provided at an affordable rent.

The self builders who construct the homes were recruited at a local college open day and are completing a two-year paid apprenticeship working with local contractor Harvey and Clark. The initiative includes gaining a construction qualification and the contractor hopes to offer jobs at the end of the course.

The development has benefitted from a £1.3 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency’s affordable homes programme. Trent & Dove has now applied for funding from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills’ regional growth fund to support another self build scheme of ten homes.
