Work is set to commence on a large number of self build plots at the Newcastle Great Park scheme – an urban extension to the north of the city centre – with a quarter already snapped up.

The 39 plots at Elmwood Park Green come in five different sizes priced between £155,000 and £170,000 each. Developer Charles Church North East is providing road access to the plots – first earmarked in 2013 – which will also be provided with foul and surface water drainage and utilities such as water, gas, electricity and telecommunications. People have the freedom to design and construct their own home, which can be up to three storeys high, whilst still working within a Design Framework.

However, John Eynon, deputy managing director for Charles Church North East, stressed that while the framework encourages high quality architectural design and protects the visual amenity of the site, it will not inhibit innovation and individuality.

Mr Eynon added: “We believe there is a growing demand for people to build their own homes, not just as a cost-effective way of owning their own home but as a means of living in their dream home. The 39 serviced self-build plots are the result of an inspiring initiative by Newcastle City Council. It seems we are leading the way up north when it comes to individuality and meeting people’s desires to create the perfect home.”
