Custom build homes finally get green light in East London

A number of custom build homes are finally set to be built in East London.

Housing provider East Thames has been selected to deliver a terrace of nine two to four-bed homes – seven for sale and two for rent – at Vandome Close, Custom House. Designs are yet to be finalised and a contractor is yet to be appointed. However, it is hoped that construction will start on site by the end of March 2015.

The London Borough of Newham first identified an opportunity for custom build on the cleared garage site in the Greater London Authority’s custom build prospectus ‘Build your own home – the London way’ published in July 2012.

Six serviced plots available in South Devon

A custom build project of six serviced plots, each to feature four/five-bed detached homes (pictured), is underway in South Devon.

Devon Self Build is delivering the project and hopes to gauge interest in the plots in Maidencombe, some as large as 0.6 acres, which will cost from £135,000 to £195,000. This is its first scheme and it is actively looking for more, in particular within the Teignbridge Planning area, which has been targeted as one of five councils throughout the UK to actively promote self build.

Plots 1-4 will feature three-storey four/five-bed detached houses and plots 5 and 6 will hold single-storey four-bed detached houses. All the homes have been designed by a local architect and can be customised internally to suit individual requirements. Installation of services and road access starts next month.

Councils gauge demand for self build

More councils have stepped forward to gauge levels of demand for self build in their local areas.

South Gloucestershire Council is asking people to complete an online survey to enable it to find out how many people are interested in building their own home, and what help people need to do this. There are 12 questions in total and some ask why people might be interested in building their own home, where they are thinking of building, and how difficult the process has been. The survey is open until 31st August.

Meanwhile, the results of a similar survey by Wokingham Borough Council show that more than 200 people expressed an interest in self build. It is understood that there will be an in-depth analysis of the registrations of interest before a self build ‘consultant’ is appointed to inform those who registered of the next steps in the process by the end of August.
