Thousands of new self build homes are likely to be in the pipeline following a Government announcement about plans to develop up to three new Garden Cities, each with 15,000 homes.

The Self Build Portal understands that, across all three new developments, as many as 5,000 self/custom build homes could be created.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg revealed the Garden City proposals at his monthly media conference this week.

A prospectus has also been released inviting bids from councils interested in developing one of the new cities. Clegg said the document was “a call to arms for visionaries in local areas in need of housing to put forward radical and ambitious proposals to develop their own garden cities”.

Chancellor George Osborne announced in last month’s budget that a new 15,000 home garden city would be built at Ebbsfleet, Kent. Clegg’s latest announcement is on top of this project.

Each of the cities is likely to be delivered by a newly-created Urban Development Corporation, and we understand that these would all be required by the Government to include a significant provision for self build homes.

Media reports earlier this year suggested the the new cities might be built in Oxfordshire, Warkwickshire or Buckinghamshire. However, the prospectus does not identify the preferred locations.
