Stoke-on-Trent City Council is looking to create two new self and custom build developments that could give 31 families the chance to create their own homes. The sites for both developments are owned by the council – the first is off Caverswall Lane, Meir, which would provide 21 plots, and a further 10 homes could be built in Blurton.
The news comes on the heels of the success of Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Penkhull Farm scheme, which saw six self-build properties completed last year. The local authority sold the fully servied plots for the homes by auction – with five out of six plots going for considerably more than their estimate (the price per plot went up from £35,000 to more than £75,000). The successful purchasers had to promise to submit their individual planning applications within six months, and they were required to complete the construction of their homes by the end of 2015.
The city council received £79,500 of Government funding to create more plots after being chosen as a Right to Build Vanguard local authority, and some of this has been spent developing the new plans for Meir and Blurton. It’s thought that the former site will be sold as individual serviced plots, while the latter will be sold to a developer who will offer a custom build solution to prospective buyers.
