Cherwell District Council (CDC) once again picked up the gong for the National Custom and Self Build Association sponsored ‘Best Council for Self/Custom Builders’ category at the Build It Awards 2015. The annual celebration – which commends self build projects, products, services and suppliers – applauded CDC for its pioneering Build! project and the Graven Hill development (main picture).
Cllr John Donaldson, CDC’s lead member for housing, said: “This award recognises the success that Cherwell District Council is having in finding innovative solutions to the difficulty of providing affordable housing. We recognised that to meet many residents’ aspirations to have their own homes we would need to pursue new alternatives. Self build projects are pivotal to this, with Build! and Graven Hill demonstrating how it can be done.
“We’re proud of what we have accomplished through Build! and the Graven Hill development and we’re confident that we are pioneering solutions that others will want to follow.”
Other winners included Guy and Julia Seaton who took away the Best Self Build Award for their project (pictured right) which blends contemporary with traditional, glass with brick and oak to create a wonderful family home. Bristol Community Land Trust scooped the Best Collective or Group Self Build accolade for its Fishponds Road scheme. The Best Custom Build Project winner was Blueprint for Green Street Phase II.
