A number of self build homes are set to become part of a large housing development planned for the western side of Basingstoke.

The Manydown project proposes around 3,400 new homes overall, plus a new local centre, a new primary school site and other facilities. Opportunities are to be provided for people to build their own homes – however, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) has not managed to provide further details and highlight exactly how many self build homes are likely to feature.
People could also opt to have a custom build home for themselves, and they could even team up for a cohousing scheme. Plans will be drawn up for infrastructure such as key roads and drainage, as well as a detailed application for a new country park.
The vision has been developed by BDBC and Hampshire County Council in collaboration with consultants Beyond Green and public engagement company Remarkable Group to ensure that local community groups and residents get involved in drawing up the masterplan. They will ensure residents are kept up to date on what is happening and provide a range of ways they can have their say.
BDBC Cabinet member Cllr John Izett said: “We have a great opportunity at Manydown, as well as a responsibility as public owners, to create a new community where people will want to live and which is well connected to and brings benefits to neighbouring communities and respects the local environment.
“It is central to our thinking and approach that local people will be involved in helping to shape Manydown. Both councils are committed for the long term and wish to ensure a successful new community grows up founded on well planned, energy efficient homes that are built to last and to be loved in the years ahead.”
The aim is to submit an outline planning application at the end of next year with work on site likely to start in 2018.
