A scheme to help people build or commission their own home will be announced by the Queen in tomorrow’s State Opening of Parliament.

The ‘Right to Build‘ – supporting aspiring self and custom builders, by requiring councils to identify and release shovel-ready plots – will be included in the Housing Bill, which contains a number of other Conservative election pledges.
First earmarked last autumn, the Right to Build aims to increase housing supply and diversify the housing sector by giving people the right to be allocated land with planning permission for them to self build or commission a local builder to build a home. And, with a ready-supply of plots allocated by local authorities, people will not have to wait years to get work underway.
Self or custom build delivers a majority of homes in many other countries and the Government believes it can act as a boost to smaller and medium-sized builders.
