Self build homes could still feature as part of a new housing development in Wiltshire after an initial scheme failed to take off.

New plans for a mixed range housing development at Boreham Road, Warminster have been submitted by landowner HPH Commercial Property for 35 new homes, featuring seven plots for self builders. The site will also be surrounded by an ecological zone protecting and enhancing the nearby River Wylye.
Originally, the 3 acre site was earmarked for a government-backed Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) self build scheme accommodating between 20 and 75 individual self build plots. The NDO project looked to provide local people with the power to decide on any development, through a local referendum. Warminster Town Council originally gave it its full support, but then cut all ties in June which stopped the NDO process.
HPH has now decided to move forward with an outline application for the development of the site, taking on board the feedback from the initial NDO community consultation.
Paul Richards, Best Practice Manager at the National Self Build Association who also sat on the Boreham Road NDO Steering Group, said: “After the disappointment of the local town council not wishing to pursue this venture, when so many people had put so much time and effort into the process, I am very pleased that the scheme now being presented to the planning authority has retained a percentage of self build houses. I hope this will help people to realise the benefit of self building on more plots and in larger groups in the future.”
