Self build homes should play a key part in any new Garden Cities or major urban extensions. This is one of the main conclusions of a new report published by the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA).

‘Creating Garden Cities and Suburbs Today – a guide for councils‘ aims to assist local authorities in recognising and delivering new homes and workplaces.
The document highlights that individual self build plots and community self build projects should be catered for in the master plans for all future Garden Cities.
The TCPA believes that new comprehensively planned sustainable communities have a powerful contribution to make to Britain’s future. The Association says they are a good way to deliver housing and create jobs. They also provide the opportunity and the economies of scale to innovate and create truly high-quality places.
The report reminds councils of the £30 million Custom Build funding programme to support self or custom builders.
Ted Stevens, Chair of National Self Build Association said: “In their heyday the new towns and garden cities of the last century delivered tens of thousands of new homes in an innovative and positive way. They demonstrated that planners can play a very powerful ‘enabling’ role, particularly when it comes to community-led development and self build. We welcome any new developments of this type that lead to opportunities for the huge numbers of people that want to build a home for themselves.”
