A Scottish Council, that has been servicing land for self builders for many years, is looking for interest on a number of sites in St Margaret’s Hope.

Orkney Islands Council has plans to create up to ten sites in the village, to be made available for self build purposes. Initially, only four will be released but, should there be enough interest, then a further six will be made available. The sites should be available for sale in late 2014.
Luke Fraser, Development Officer at the Council, said: “We’ve never actually managed to make any serviced sites available in St Margaret’s Hope before, but we have had people come to us and say they’d like some. I’ve already had two interested individuals who have come forward in recent days”.
Typical land costs are currently unavailable, but the average price for similar serviced sites in the region are between £30,000-£37,000.
The above map illustrates the serviced sites location. Also, available to view via satellite.
St Margaret’s Hope has a population of around 550. Concerns might be raised about an increase in pressure on the local infrastructure. Mr Fraser doesn’t think it’s too much of an issue: “There are many people in this area of South Ronaldsay who are very interested in self build. Self build up here is a huge tradition, particularly in the rural areas. There were more of the Scottish Government’s Rural Home Ownership Grants (RHOGs) held in Orkney than the rest of Highland, Shetland and the like, put together”.
